I found a great fungus conk pyrographed with an owl a month or two ago by the same maker that signed this one

but have learned that sometimes when the leather skin came off a softball

with what appear to be handwritten numbers on the recessed wood tiles

make me think this is likely a mourning piece and dates to the 1860s

There is a finely carved border around the perimeter on both front and back as well as three rows of three lines on the spine, and what I assume are the initials of the carver, AD, at the bottom left corner of the heart, which kicks a bit in the that direction!
